type='text'>Another K Record?

It's clear that Ryan Howard is well on his way to breaking his own single season strikeout record from last season (currently projected: 224, 25 more than 2007 total)

There's an outside chance he can do something no other batter has ever done: Record more strikeouts as a batter than anyone records as a pitcher.
In 2007, 7 pitchers had more strikeouts than Howard's record-setting 199. As of now, only one does.
With his 4 K performance yesterday, Howard now has 101 strikeouts, only 4 fewer than the 105 batters that Edinson Volquez has struck out.

Also of interest, Chase Utley is the only batter with more home runs (22) than Brett Myers has allowed (20). And they are both on the Phillies. Upon hearing of his death from leukemia, I looked up his stats and was surprised to see he only hit .231 in a 10 year career, with a total of 14 home runs. My memory of his playing days is stronger than it deserves to be since he spent time with my beloved Mets in my prime baseball fanatic days. I collected autographs of pit-stop Mets like Jim, Bill Sudakis, and Phil Hennigan.

The day that Jim Beauchamp got etched in my Mets memory bank was Aug. 21, 1972. That was Jim's birthday, and he hit two home runs. He only hit 5 total in his two seasons with the Mets, but I thought he had a lot more based on that summer day. I remember Ralph Kiner's call as the second one was leaving the yard: "going, going, going, happy birthday Jim Beauchamp!". On the post-game Kiner's Korner, Ralph asked him if he's ever hit 2 home runs on this birthday before ( a quick glance at the back of his baseball card would have shown how unlikely that was). Jim, in a shy, southern drawl, said "Nah, I may have hit one on my daughter's birthday in the minors"

You only had 181 at bats in a NY uniform, but you're always a Met. That's an average of over 227 hits per year! The only question on whether he'll reach the 3000 hit milestone is how long he'll be able to play. Since he didn't start playing in the major leagues until he was 28, he'll need to keep up his pace into his 40's to get the additional 1,408 hits needed. He currently has fewer hits than several other players his age (33), such as Jason Kendall, Shannon Stewart, and Bobby Abreau. Nobody's talking about Jason Kendall being a 3000 hit guy.

You should note that it took Pete Rose and Hank Aaron 9 seasons to have as many hits as Ichiro has in 7.

And when Pete Rose was Ichiro's current age, he went on to get 1,919 more hits

My prediction: hit #3000: May 2015

Powered by ScribeFire.

Dodgers vs Giants

Big news around Dodgertown with the Joe Torre signing. Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson, four 20-game winners in one season!

Now, they are a game away from the AL East cellar, a place almost exclusively reserved for the Devil Rays.

Since their embarrassing for the ages 30-3 loss on Aug. 22, the O birds have gone 3-18, and their bullpen has an ERA of 11.19. These are the guys you count on to shut things down giving up more than one run/inning. More of a concern is that the bullpen is averaging close to 7 walks/9 IP and 14 hits/9 IP in this time. Allowing over 20 baserunners per 9 innings is not a formula for success.

Like the Giants, a team with a beautiful ball park but nothing to show

Rick Wise - HOF trade bait

36 years ago, Rick Wise, pitcher for the Phillies, hit two home runs to against the SF Giants. With 138 he's now on pace for 182.
Plus, it looks like he won't lead the league for a fourth straight year.
Ryan Howard has shot past him, sitting on 149 K's before reaching 100 Hits for the year. Howard is on pace for 196 strikeouts so he could take a run at Dunn's record.

The last player to lead the NL in K's for four straight years was Vince DiMaggio (1942-45). Mr. K himself, Reggie Jackson, led the AL in K's from (1968-71)

If Dunn should pass Howard, he would be the only one to lead the majors in 4 straight years.

Dunn has already passed Sosa for most strikeouts for a four year span (2004-2007). With 25 more K's this year (which he should have by early Sep), he'd average a whopping 180 strikeouts a year for 4 years! Through all the speculation about whether he could be attracted to the big lights of New York, the big money from Arlington, TX, or the comfort of staying close to his home of the last few years, San Francisco, no one seems to pick up on the clues Barry is throwing our way. He wants to win. He wants to be a champion. With the A's, he reached the post-season 5 times, only recently got to see what it was like to win a series, yet has not sniffed the grand stage of the World Series. This is not something the big money of the Rangers can deliver (ask Alex Rodriguez). After a 50+ year drought, the Giants are less poised for a title run than they've been for close to a decade with their aging re-treads.

Zito will be a Met.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://baseballallday.blogspot.com/2006/12/zito-coming-to-giants-not.html' title='Zito Coming to Giants ... Bagwell is a member of a dieing breed in baseball: a star who plays his entire career with one team. Coincidentally, his teammate Craig Biggio is also a member of this club.

You'll hear much more about this phenomena at next years Hall of Fame induction. On the dais will be two of the biggest stars who wore only one name on their chests - Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn.

Bagwell is the active leader in career home runs for a player who's only played for one team (449). With news of his retirement, that distinction falls to Chipper Jones (357). Like Bagwell, Jones also has a star teammate who has only played for one team - Andruw Jones.

Big Mac to go?

Maybe this is what Mark McGwire had in mind when he told the congressional hearing that he wanted to focus on the future. Is the Hall of Fame in Big Mac's future? His name now appears on the ballot along with other

When he retired, McGwire was considered a first-ballot shoo-in. 583 career home runs. The best at-bat/home run ratio in the history of the game (One home run every 10.6 at bats, compared to Babe Ruth's one every 11.8 at bats). Sixty home runs in a season had been a herculean milestone ever since 1927 when Ruth first reached that pinnacle. McGwire averaged over 61 home runs over a four year period (1996-1999). There was no denying his dominance in the power aspect of the game.

Yet his induction speech has been put on hold following the specualtion and allegation of steroid use. From 1993 - 1995, he was plagued by injuries that didn't seem to heal, managed to appear in only about one third of his teams games. He always had the home run swing, as demonstrated by setting a home run record for a rookie in 1987 with 49. But his durability was what kept him from matching that total for the next 8 years. Then, suddenly in 1996 he became an iron man.

What makes McGwire's case tougher this year is that he shares the ballot with legends Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn. Both these giants are examples of the greatness of the game. Both scandal free role models who played their entire careers with one team, demonstrating a hard working diligence and respect for the game. The thought of these ambassadors of baseball sharing the podium with the cloud-covered McGwire could be too much for the voters to take.
Don't detract from these great men's ultimate baseball day with volumes of stories and debate on how to handle the steroid users. By the Red Sox? Have we gone through the looking glass? Next we'll be hearing how Twinkies are good for you and vegetables cause obesity.

The Bosox bid over $51 million for the right to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, a star pitcher from Japan who has never pitched in the major leagues. On top of that, they'll need to actually pay him a salary north of $12 million/year. This is a big event for several reasons.
- It keeps the Yankees from getting a star starting pitcher which they desperately need.
- It shows that the Red Sox are not content with one World Series title every eighty years or so
- Inflated salaries are back! It's said he hit 102 MPH on the radar gun, and that got me thinking: "How different does 102 mph look to a hitter than 100 mph?" Granted, there aren't that many guys throwing in 3 digits, but the big leaguers do get to see it and are expected to hit it.

A 100 mph fastball will reach the plate in 0.41 seconds. In that much time, a 102 mph pitch will travel 61.7 feet, ie. it will be just over one foot past the front of the plate. So as fast as a batter's reaction time needs to be to make solid contact with a 100 mph pitch, he'll still be way late on the 102 mph.

How about the difference between 95 mph and 102 mph?
If your swing is timed for the 95er, the 102er will be a good 4.4 feet past you by the time your bat crosses the plate.

Should Giants resign Bonds?

Are you crazy? The only reason I hear why the San Francisco should resign Barry Bonds is so that he could break the ultimate home run record in a Giants uniform. Big deal! Don't sacrifice the whole season for this.
They will have a new manager and, hopefully, a set of new players to fill in for their departing free agents. Why subject them to the Bonds sideshow?
There are too many open questions

How many games can he play?

How many innings of each game will he be able to limp out to left field?

Will he be in jail?

Even if you can get him at an incentive-laden discount from this year (which he's already said would be unacceptable), you can't build a winner around a guy who will play less than 20 innings a week.

... and if he goes to an American League team and has a Frank Thomas kind of year, don't say it was a mistake to let him go. He can do so much more offensively as a DH when he can ice down his joints while his teammates play the field.
